Rainbows of Death

Rainbows of Death huh?!?! Electronic acts continue to get weirder and weirder... Is it some sort of marketing formula or is is it just weirdbeard style? Listen to this gem and you be the judge... Fortunately, I did all the heavy lifting and spared you from all the creepy stuff that comes up when you google the phrase... including conspiracy theories or death metal websites. ThIS Rainbow of Death is from Aussieland and they do have a Facebook page, which describes the duo as a black guy and a white guy plus a couple of synths creating Nu Disco & House... good work ROB.

Cassius - I love U So - Video

I seranaded Savannah with this song on our way home from Dos Coyotes, which reminded me that i needed to post this sweet video...

Cassius, I Love you so from WE ARE FROM L.A on Vimeo.

Trip Down Memory Lane: The Bloody Beetroots

Back in my burgeoning electronic phase, I stumbled across these guys and became instantly hooked... Justice had come out with their catchy D.A.N.C.E. track and hard core electronic music was reaching its tipping point... BB somehow took it to the next level and I ingeniously was able to convince Savannah to go with me to a BB concert with Felix Cartel as the opener and LA Riots at the Roxy

we'll start off a track for the small minded, a little more friendly for everyone...
Steve Aoki - The Killers - Spaceman (Steve Aoki & The Bloody Beetroots Remix)

Next up is straigh Bloody FIRE! pure electro party rager circa 2008
The Bloody Beetroots - Butter (EP Version)
but sometimes its more fun to watch a video of epic surf footage and epic electro party jams... wait for the BB goodness to kick in around 1:06min

PRESS PAUSE from ian MOURIER on Vimeo.

This one is a newbie, but a goodie... The Bloody Beetroots, after a lot of initial success, got lost in the burgeoning genre and spent a lot of their time creating rowdy garbage... so its nice to hear a new track of theirs reminiscent of their original material.
The Chemical Brothers - Dissolve (The Bloody Beetroots Remix)

Last up is quite possibly the most intense song you'll ever cross paths with... fun to creep out friends or add to a halloween mix... tread lightly!
Proxy - Who Are You? (Bloody Beetroots Remix With Voices)

RCRDLBL Pilfering #2 - Huge List

Gonna try something a little different this time. I'm going to put some of the more indie alternative tracks in the front, hoping that ppl won't immediately get turned off by my weirder tastes...

Cold War Kids - Louder than ever

Voxhaul Broadcast - Leaving on the 5th (Jump Clubb remix) --- reminiscent of a Miike Snow production. Totally enjoyable

Has some sort of distorted gospel soul BRMC meets Black Keys... grimy funky pop music featuring Wale as well as hand claps and infectious breaks. Never thought I would be saying this, but good work Samantha Ronson...?!!?

White Buffalo - Oh Darlin, What have I done - Wiskey tavern folk/rock for those who aren't familiarThis brings me back to the TLand days...

Tame Impala (Pilooki Remix)

sounds a little Feisty... like it might end up on an ipod commercial - remixed by RAC(remix artist collective) who often times add interesting elements to songs without completely destroying the original integrity - good work guys...

Sunday Girl vs Rusko - Hey Stop - posted for Nick

Claire Maguire - Aint Nobody (Coyote Remix) - Whoa... I feel like I'm getting transported back to a Fleetwood Mac concert

Dels - Trumpalump (Joe Goddard Remix) - JG is the frontman for Hot Chip... so you know its gonna be good.

Das Racist - I'm Up on That --- These guys are awesome... clever, funny, witty and fresh. Atmosphere raps meets Beck inspired spoken word by Middle Eastern dudes

MJ? JT? nope... Penguin Prison with a nice poppy gem. His sound should eventually get some radio play...

How many artists can you squeeze into one track? I'm not a fan of spankrock or amanda blank... but fortunately Shazam rescues this one with some grooved out retro piano synths and overall laid back interpretation.

again.. not that stoked on spankrock... but when he's getting remixed by Todd Edwards, who chops, twists and distorts everything... I love it.

Annorak - Try Me (Jupiter Remix) - this can transform your bedroom into the island beach bar or at least add a little bit pep to your lovelorn step.

Chemical Brothers - Dissolve (the Bloody Beetroots remix) - These guys absolutely destroy shiz... and they don't hold back on this one.

UK Grime Meets UK MC meets UK Dubstep... heavy... sounds like a Dizzy wannabe behind the mic. whatevs... I like it

Oneohtrix Point Never - Returnal (ft Anthony Hegarty)(Blixaboy Futurna Freemix) --- ambient atmospheric reminiscent of a radiohead track

Blixaboy - New Age Steppa --- ambient haunting gorillaz styled dub - really good and weird!

interesting... not for the faint of heart

pure techno weirdbeardness with the electronic music Godfathers, Simian Mobile Disco... seriously, go buy their Attack Destroy Sustain Release and you will not regret (don't listing to this song as a point of reference) - Strap into your electric chair and let this one fry your brain (jay raymond, i think you'll like this one...)

irresistable 80's style groove...

Temper Trap Remixed...

First off... Temper Trap's Conditions is a great album. There is also a Conditions Remixed, which takes to album to a whole nother level after commissioning other artists to roll up their sleeves, get dirty and remix the orginal songs. Noteworthy is Kings of Convenience's album Versus, which did the same thing albeit nine years ago (and still incredible today)

As a starter, we'll begin with the original track to give everyone a foundation. For the indie purists out there, the original may be preferable. Its a great track but a little too slow for my alrady acclimated to crazy shiz musical brain.

The Temper Trap - Soldier On by bananacakes

Next up is the same track, this time under the helm of Rusko, who instinctually set the mood for a little sensual dance moves (I imagine Nick & Miller both working a dimly lit room full of girls with their dance moves((noteworthy is chromeo's music video for Night by Night doing exactly that - Chromeo - Night by Night)<-- highly recommended viewing))

Soldier On (Ruskos F'kin Seagull Remix).mp3 by Zucco

Lastly, and what I really want to share with all of you, is the same song remixed by an artist who needs a little more love, Big City Love Affair. By not taking quite so much artistic liberty allows BCLA to really draw on what really makes the song in the first place. Preserving the intimacy, a little less production and a little more step to keep the listener interested.

Soldier On by BCLA

Bonus: another TT track remixed by Keljet, who sucessfully captains this spaceship into a galaxy of rythmic house, groovy guitar riffz and infectious house... loving it.

Miami Horror

This song just came on my ipod and I had a flashback to Malibu beach parties and awesome times in Santa Monica circa 08-09, which in turn inspired this impromtu post...Its hard to explain how good this song is and I'm not feeling that creative right now. Just trust me... Miami Horror started off remixing songs and have since graduated to making their own infectious Austrailian electronic pop...

What is a scene?

A cultural music lesson with White Light

What makes a scene? Today, the internet seems to break all geographical barriers, not making it hard for anybody with a laptop to duplicate what they heard on a website. So does that mean we are left with a totally homogeneous sound that lacks variety? Luckily, I think that locale still determines the type of style and sound. Here are a few quick examples

LA Hip Hop
Take - Horizontal Figuration Tokimonsta Remix by TOKiMONSTA

Erick Rincon is a teenager making this hyped up cumbia called 3ball (tribal). This stuff, I assume, goes nuts at underage house parties in his hometown of Monterey, Mexico.

Machine gun ragga or dirty arab garage is maybe the best way to describe this magic.

Spaced Out Music - Might be a little overwhelming for some...

I love spaced out music but often have a hard time finding the right spot for them in a playlist or mixtape... They usually surface all of the sudden and totally kills my buzz... whats that you say? you know the feeling?!!?

That's why i created a little playlist specifically for these awesome (seriously... they're awesome) tracks. Perfect for long drives, contemplation, day dreams, naps, journaling, reading?, studying, sophisticated parties...

suggested consumption: download all of them, put them on a cd, listen to ever track fully at least 3 times (don't skip) to allow full immersion. Then listen one more time, write me a love letter on facebook or below, and then support the artists.

Sorry to let all my followers down, but we're taking a slightly different angle on this friday post, cause I'm going to do a little fly fishing this evening! Radiolab - my inner nerd

I can't help it but share with you all... Radiolab is the most interesting radio program I've ever encountered, is like mr Toad's wild ride through philosphy and science in an accessible and light-hearted manner... perfectly packaged presented with a distinctive audio production style.

It's like crack for your intellect... hour-long episodes with stories, interviews, and thought experiments approaching broad topics from mulitple angles. The knowlege you learn and stories you hear are seared into your brain out of pure interest and its impossible to forget. really fascinating stuff.

Insanely good content for those that are interested...

DeerHunter

DeerHunter has been owning my playlists right now. Their new cd came out late september and created quite a stir in the blogosphere with their "helicopter". some of you might be aware of the lead singer's side project, Atlas Sound...

starting off reeeaaaally mellow, maybe we'll work up to something...? Just give it a moment to work its magic, let the sidechain compression (reverbesk) kick build and BOOOOMM! A little overwhelming for the uninitiated... Its ok. Check out the original and you'll find your place...

Cee Lo Green - DJ Madness Mixtape

Cee Lo G's been making some waves as of late... not that he doesn't deserve all of it... I featured his insanely catchy "F**k You" a little while ago, which has since been ingeniously re-tooled for the radio into "Forget You"... Well, I had this mixtape that DJ Madness compiled a couple months ago and I sat on it...

Now that I've given it a couple of listens, I can't help but share... This mix is SICCCK! Goodie Mob, Outkast, Gnarls Barkley and Cee Lo G all mixed up through 44 tracks for 80 minutes of glory. I suggest downloading the track separated zip file, but it will require a little more work (ie downloading, adding to itunes, creating a playlist and organizing)

the funky drop at 1:06 gets me every time... reminiscent of the ever-memorable rabid warthog break-down in Joakim's remix of SMD's "Hustler" a while back?...
Simian Mobile Disco - Hustler (Joakim Remix)
this song might completely give you the wierded out chillys... but the original is pure style and this remix is timeless!!!

last song before we go off on some beat making craziness... Dada Life - two swedes creating some Maximal goodness and breathing new life into a relatively unknown Austrailian act.

Care for a Danish?

I'm not sure how I managed to encounter this electronic/pop jam infused with classical elements, but I'm glad I did and I hope you do too. Not a raving firestarter or something overly catchy... but if you give it a chance and let it ebb and flow, it will win you over... Around minute four I started the song over because the catchiness sneaks up on you

Unfortunately my blog won't support the Danish player provided on the website, however clicking on the link will direct you to mixtoverderner.dk and will cue the song in the player, which you will then be able to download if you like!
http://www.mixtoverdener.dk/#/436169/?play_id=305909

From what I was able to gather, Bjarke Niemann is an artist who usually plays as part of Spleen United, although it this case, he was commissioned by some alchemistic Danish website that offers a classical song on a monthly basis to an artist community with the intents of mixing that shiz together and creating something beautiful.

I'm really pleased with the outcome and over the period of this write up, have fortunately found a couple more that are worth a listen.

A Party in the Making

Right around now... maybe a little earlier, I'm starting to think about the perfect weekend mix... The recipe will depend on the forseen events. Without knowing what my weekend has in store, these three will definately be included. I am tickled to present a new Bag Raiders track! You might recall the most epic party jam of 2009, "Shooting Star"? maybe? If not, I added it below for those a little behind the curve...
Bag Raiders / Way Back Home by reesindiemusic

Download Link

B.R. set the bar unreachably high with Shooting Star... Instead of trying to top it, it appears they reinvented themselves into what I thought would be Cut Copy's follow up album... Their timing has been perfect because Cut Copy appears to be reinventing themselves as some sort of electronically infused Beatles... It all gets a little confusing, but the moral of the story is that the Austrailian Electronic scene is a complete orgy of creativity... and is full-tilt radical right now. I couldn't resist to put this song on the blog... because it has inspired countless dance parties with just me and Savannah and deserves to be spread to the four corners...

I've been marinating a number of Fenech-Soler tracks as of late and really enjoying their music... then I crossed paths with MudgeMix Favorite Alex Metric's remix of an Fenech-Soler track and it left me speechless... Seriously got sweaty by listening to it!!!! Patience is a virtue and its fruits will be reaped approx 2 minutes into this Beast of a song... After an intense build up, this track UNLEASHES in true Metric style with pianos, the echoed vocals, the computer bleeps... Without further ado... enjoy!
